about

Doves and Herons looks into individual lives and fringed situations on and around the American Sofa. Have a seat and enjoy!

Sonny Veneer creates sounds that explore the psychogeographical yearnings of youth, while kicking with the damage of experience. The band began as a distillation of the dregs of earlier Chicago bands and influences, including Quiet Kid, Go Time, Daemon Familiar, Parallax and The Race Crew. In 2008, founding singer/songwriter John Llewellyn assembled a Zakopane Lounge-based alliance of fellow travelers who shared an appetite for relative originality.
On Sonny Veneer’s first LP, Teleprompt, electronic beats and programmed textures form the skeleton of the sound, blasted by Scott Niekelski’s bass casting. Electronic henchman Chris “Scendo” Meiferdt had to leave the country soon after that release, but lead guitarist Ronnie Stevie “The Grill” Weber joined to lay down some heavy slop. Years of battling through thickets of buzzed electronic confusion led to the timely arrival of drummer Wendi Freeman in 2019. “Throwing off the chains of virtual beat-seekers and adopting a lower-tech - nay, prehistoric lineup has been a real Dorothy moment,” mumbles taciturn singer Llewellyn.
